The Snake Pit at the Indy 500

Every year, the Indianapolis 500, or Indy 500, comes to the Motor Speedway, and every year, huge name EDM artists follow it. If not familiar with the midwest, the Indy 500 is an annual racing event that marks the beginning of the summer season for those who reside in the Indianapolis area. Something people may not know about the 500, however, is that every year in the middle of the raceway during the race, there is a huge EDM concert going on too called The Snake Pit.

About Snake Pit

The Indy 500 i steeped in tradition, one of those traditions being The Snake Pit. Each year, the Indy 500 brings in huge name EDM artists to play during the race. For 2019, the event has attracted huge name artists Skrillex, Alesso, Illenium, and Chris Lake. The stage is set up on the infield, adjacent to turn 3. What time will performances start? Try 7am sharp. It’s not uncommon to see fans preparing early in the mornings tailgating before the doors open. Specific set times have yet to be announced, but will be updated on their website, here, when the date gets closer.

The Artists

In previous years the event has held huge industry names such as Diplo, Griz, and DeadMau5, with the trend is continuing for 2019. Probably one of the most anticipated sets, Skrillex, is set to play. After taking a hiatus from the EDM world and touring, Skrillex is back on the circuit. Also on the lineup is huge name bass music artist, Illenium. After dropping tons of new music in 2018 and 2019, this Denver native is bringing his set to the mid-west. House music is coming to the Indy 500 this year too. Chris Lake, a well-known industry name, is bringing his funky tunes for everyone to throw down to during the race. Last, but certainly not least, Alesso is also on the event lineup with his electro-house beats. After hitting his leap into mainstream fandom, he is continued to push out songs with huge industry names in collaboration.

The Event

The Snake Pit is actively held during the Indy 500 race. All fans wishing to go to Snake Pit need to purhcase both an Indy 500 ticket and an individual Snake Pit ticket. Tickets are still up for purchase here. There are two different options, GA and VIP, with VIP obviously offering extra amenities. The Speedway gates open at 6:00 am EDT sharp, with The Snake Pit gates following close behind at 7:00 am EDT. The music will start shortly after, with the official race starting at 12:20 pm EDT. Fans will not be permitted to enter and exit multiple times, so once in, make sure to stay there. Get more information about times and directions here.

Security and Allow Items

Something to note for the event as well is that they do allow fans to bring in their own beverages/coolers. Coolers and bags with dimensions 18”x14”x14” are allowed inside the venue and concert grounds, however, all contents will be checked by security before entrance. Event goers will also be allowed to bring in several different things including Cambelbacks, chairs and umbrellas. The entire list of allowed and not allowed items can be found here.
